Directed Futures

Rotation and magnetism are the origins of Directed Futures; these two phenomena are prevalent in every day life. This project is an attempt to experience these phenomena in their purest state. It is a ten foot tall, one foot diameter aluminum cylinder with an adjustable low rpm A/C motor within it. The motor drives a series of magnets within the cylinder. Mirror finished spheres roll along the surface of the cylinder following the magnetic fields.

This project is the result of partnership between Joey Grimm and ZAHNER® Architectural Metal; ZAHNER® is known throughout the world for its engineered metal contributions, from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain to Herzong & De Meuron's de Young Museum in San Francisco. The company is making moves to branch out a Hands of the Artist program where artists can work with the engineers and craftsmen at ZAHNER® to assist in the creation of professionally crafted work.
